How to Choose the Right Angle Grinder

Angle grinders are among the most versatile power tools on any job site, but choosing the wrong one can cost you time — or worse, lead to an accident. Here’s what to consider.

Disc size

The most common sizes are 115 mm, 125 mm, and 230 mm. Smaller discs (115–125 mm) are lighter and easier to control — ideal for precision cuts and metalwork. Larger discs (230 mm) remove material faster but are heavier and require more skill to use safely.

Power

For occasional home use, 720–900 W is sufficient. For continuous professional use — cutting thick steel, stone, or concrete — look for 1,400 W or more. Cordless models (18–36 V) give you freedom of movement but check battery runtime for your intended tasks.

Safety features to look for

• Kickback brake — stops the disc in under 0.1 s if it binds
• Restart protection — motor won’t restart after a power cut
• Vibration dampening — reduces fatigue during long sessions
