SDS-Plus vs SDS-Max: Which Rotary Hammer Do You Need?
Choosing between SDS-Plus and SDS-Max is one of the most common questions we get at Elvaro. The short answer: SDS-Plus for most jobs, SDS-Max for serious demolition and large-diameter drilling.
SDS-Plus
SDS-Plus is the standard for rotary hammers up to about 5 J impact energy. It accepts bits up to 26 mm diameter and is suitable for:
- Anchor bolt installation (6–20 mm)
- Drilling through walls for conduit and pipe
- Light demolition and chiselling
Typical tools: Bosch GBH 2-28 F, Makita HR2630, Hilti TE 30-A36.
SDS-Max
SDS-Max handles higher impact energies (5–25 J) and larger bit diameters — up to 52 mm for core drilling. Use it for:
- Heavily reinforced concrete
- Core drilling for drainage and electrical conduit
- Heavy demolition
Typical tools: Bosch GBH 8-45 D, Makita HR4001C.
Quick rule of thumb
If the hole is under 20 mm, SDS-Plus will do. Over 30 mm or through thick reinforced concrete — go SDS-Max. Both are available for rent at Elvaro.
