Li-Ion Battery Care: How to Extend Battery Life

A quality Li-Ion pack is one of the most expensive parts of any cordless platform — often more than the bare tool it powers. Treat it well and it will hold capacity for years. Abuse it and you’ll be buying replacements long before you should. These habits make the difference.

Charge smart, not full

Li-Ion cells dislike extremes. Constantly running a pack flat to 0% or holding it at 100% for days both accelerate wear.

• Top up little and often rather than draining to empty
• Unplug once charged — don’t leave packs on the charger for days
• Use the manufacturer’s charger; cheap chargers skip cell-balancing

Store at the right level

For batteries you won’t use for weeks, storage charge matters more than anything else. Aim for 40–60% charge — never store fully flat or fully charged for long periods. A pack left empty for months can drop below the voltage where it can safely recharge at all.

Mind the temperature

• Never charge a frozen battery — let it reach room temperature first
• Don’t leave packs in a hot van or in direct sun; heat permanently reduces capacity
• Let a hot pack cool before recharging after heavy use

Keep contacts clean

Dust, grit, and moisture on the terminals cause resistance, weak connections, and false fault readings. Wipe the contacts with a dry cloth, blow out the slots, and store packs in a dry box — not loose in a toolbag.
